MFA residency

I begin my MFA residency again this evening. I'll be live-blogging the event for my students at my other blog. I'll try to pop over here and give some updates.

Some mid-morning musings:

1) I would love to be a NAVY SEAL.
2) Scotch is great.
3) I very much enjoy my new found love of biking - particularly since my car has some weird odor that I can't find. I mean, I checked everywhere, replaced the cabin air filter, threw away the floor mats, if something died in my car, I'll be very, very, very upset.
4) I like books that are easy to read.
5) Work obsession is not healthy.
6) I've hit the wall with Barack for the moment. I'm like "honey, I know you are all about hope, but come on, it's been the same date for the six months, how about takin' me out dancin'?"
7) John McCain = total douche
8) Top Chef is the greatest reality show.
9) Morning breath is annoying.
10) I have huge eyebrows.

There you go.

I don't know...

I don't know if it is summer or what, but I have been diggin' listening to the Bee Gee's' I've Gotta Get a Message to You.

It makes me feel kinda funny (in the nether regions).

Since no one reads this blog anymore, because I basically went into a cave the last five months, I need to do some sort of promotion.

FREE CORN DOG NIGHT!!!

There - come back readers -----come back....I'll be live-blogging my week at MFA camp coming up. I'll link to my other blog and life. Yes, because in your twenties, you need to have TWO blogs. Three and you are just a douche.

Obama on father's day

My favorite part of this speech is when he quotes Chris Rock. My second is when he discusses eighth grade graduations.  Enjoy our next president - a man being honest, speaking about responsibility, and showing humility. How wonderfully refreshing.

I'm becoming very pretentious...

I get the Atlantic Monthly. I watch Keith Olbermann. I bike everywhere. I am slowly becoming a Vegetarian. I grown my own herbs. I belong to a crop-share. I read McSweeney's. I use phrases like "going forward, we must...". I make sure that I am in the car every Saturday afternoon to listen to "Wait, Wait, don't tell me..". I own a Mac. Oh, I blog.

Writing has been hard lately. I have been working, but not on my novel. I have been writing more non-fiction pieces - humor essays and the like. It helps me with narrative voice, so I don't mind.

I found the following list of thirteen writing prompts from McSweeney's. Here are the first couple:

1. Write a scene showing a man and a woman arguing over the man's friendship with a former girlfriend. Do not mention the girlfriend, the man, the woman, or the argument.

2. Write a short scene set at a lake, with trees and shit. Throw some birds in there, too.

3. Choose your favorite historical figure and imagine if he/she had been led to greatness by the promptings of an invisible imp living behind his or her right ear. Write a story from the point of view of this creature. Where did it come from? What are its goals? Use research to make your story as accurate as possible.

These aren't exactly John Gardner's Art of Fiction, but they are close.

Famous Photos

Next year, I'll be teaching Advanced Placement English - which of course scares the Bee Gees out of me. I have horrible grammar and no attention to detail - I can play it off as cute earlier, but now I have a room full of smart kids.

Insecurity is something that needs to be cultivated into anger and quenched with Scotch.

but one thing I will be teaching next year is analyzing photos. I found this website and I love it. Check it out.

by the by, it is so freakin' hot in Boston. I'm sweating like crazy. Oh I bike to work now - Al Gore loves me.

HOPE

It happened. It is happening. Yes we can!

I began this blog almost two years ago, and have neglected it recently, but it has always been about sharing my thoughts and my life - unfortunately, my life has overtaken my thoughts lately.

It is great to be back. I promise more regular posts - now that Barack is on his way and the general has begun.
